Hvitserk – Viking Warrior & Son of Ragnar Lothbrok
Hvitserk (also spelled Hvitserkr) was one of the legendary sons of Ragnar Lothbrok, known primarily from Norse sagas and medieval chronicles. While his historical existence is debated, he is often depicted as a fierce Viking warrior who fought alongside his brothers, particularly in the Great Heathen Army’s invasion of England (865 AD).

Hvitserk is often listed as one of Ragnar’s sons, alongside Ivar the Boneless, Ubba, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, and Bjorn Ironside.

Some historians believe Hvitserk might be another name for Halfdan Ragnarsson, who ruled Northumbria after the Viking conquests.
Others suggest he was a separate warrior who sought his own destiny outside of England.
Hvitserk’s Death – A Gruesome End
According to The Tale of Ragnar’s Sons, Hvitserk eventually fought against a powerful Slavic or Kievan Rus’ ruler, possibly in what is now Eastern Europe.
After being defeated in battle, he was captured by the enemy king and given a choice of how to die.
Hvitserk, embracing his Viking warrior spirit, chose to be burned alive, meeting his fate in a funeral pyre rather than surrendering.
This dramatic ending mirrors the Viking ethos of preferring an honourable death over humiliation.
