Ratatoskr

Ratatoskr is a character from Norse mythology, but he is not a Viking squirrel. Ratatoskr is a squirrel who features in the Prose Edda, a collection of Norse myths compiled in the 13th century by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson.

In Norse mythology, Ratatoskr is a squirrel who lives in the World Tree, Yggdrasil, which connects the nine realms of Norse cosmology. He runs up and down the trunk of Yggdrasil, carrying messages between the eagle perched atop the tree and the serpent Níðhöggr, who dwells beneath its roots. These messages often consist of insults and taunts, contributing to the ongoing animosity between the eagle and the serpent.

While Ratatoskr is not a Viking squirrel in the sense of being a companion to Viking warriors, he is a notable figure in Norse mythology, representing the interconnectedness of the cosmos and the cyclical nature of conflict.

Ratatoskr doesn’t have specific events attributed to him like some other mythological figures, he appears in various texts and is involved in certain interactions that contribute to the overall dynamic of Norse mythology. Here are some events or interactions involving Ratatoskr.

Messenger Between Eagle and Serpent: Ratatoskr is known for his role as a messenger between the eagle perched on the top of Yggdrasil and the serpent Níðhöggr, who resides beneath its roots. He carries messages back and forth between the two, often consisting of insults and taunts. This ongoing exchange contributes to the animosity between the eagle and the serpent.

Prominence in Skaldic Poetry: While not a specific event, Ratatoskr is mentioned in some skaldic poetry, which was composed by Norse poets. These poems often reference Ratatoskr’s role as a messenger and contribute to his characterization in Norse mythology.

Symbol of Communication and Conflict: Ratatoskr’s interactions with the eagle and the serpent serve as a symbolic representation of communication and conflict in Norse mythology. His role highlights the interconnectedness of the cosmos, as well as the perpetual tension between opposing forces.

Also we think Ratatoskr is a pretty cool little character and would be in our saga if we were to write one, had lots of fun trying to create images of him.
